My drive shaft recently fell off my Outback. They gave me a loaner car, got me a used drive shaft, recommended work that needed to be done and my car was back in the road in two days and never sounded better! I ultimately traded the car for a new one, but I will most definitely bring my new Subaru here for service.

While passing through Salem, NY the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid I was driving suffered a fatal malfunction so we pulled into Matthews Automotive. The owner, Adam Matthews was quick to diagnose the problem and placed us in one of this reliable loner vehicles even though he didn't "know us from Adam" and we lived 3 hours away in St. Albans, VT. Adam was totally professional in dealing with insurance matters, diagnosing the problem and repairing the problem. I have total confidence in Adam and his main mechanic, Jeremy and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to all my friends and relatives.

Always take care and repair - a great crew and trustworthy!

On a 4th of July visit to Salem, my car broke down and would not start. I had AAA take it to Mathews on the advice of a relative. It was July 5th at about 3 PM, an Naomi at the shop told me that they shut down at 4, so nobody could look at the vehicle until the following day. I had to return to NJ for work the next day, so I left the vehicle with them. On July 6th I got good news -- car was fixed - they replaced a missing Alternator Belt for $95 -- throw in new wiper blades and tax and bill was $130. I picked up the car on Friday, July 13 (bad omen!) and drove to Saratoga Springs to run an errand, and when I returned to the car after parking it for about 10 minutes, it would not start. I called Mathews and they said there was nothing they could do from Salem and suggested I tow it back to them. As my AAA plan gives 3 miles and then charges $4/mile after that, it would have cost me $50-60. I asked the owner if they'd cover that -- he said "No." I then asked if they would be able to look at the car that afternoon -- he said "No". I asked if there was any way that they could help me "today", stay past 4 to look at it -- he said "No" as he had plans that afternoon and would not rearrange anything. In fact, he said he could not even look at the car until Tuesday July 17, but I should tow car back and he'd figure out problem next week. The main point that he kept reiterating was that the car started when I left, so he could not have known there was anything else wrong, especially since he had replaced a missing belt. He had a valid point. I asked him if he had test driven the car to be sure it was in working order and he said something cryptic about doing test drives when they have the time. I took this to mean either he did not know whether a test drive was done or he did not do one. He started to tell me about his 30 yrs of experience and excellent reputation, and I said that's great and he may be a wonderful mechanic and a very nice man, but I was still stuck in Saratoga with a car that wouldn't start after he had it for over a week, and he seemed in no way interested in helping me. I asked him to put himself in my shoes -- having just driven 4 hours to retrieve my car, I was now stuck 4 hours from home, and the guy that "fixed" the car had no urgency in making it right. I told him I would be disputing the charge on my AmEx with the exception of the $30 for the wiper blades (I didn't do it, was just being pissy) and in no way would I ever use Matthews again. I had AAA take the car to Mavis in Saratoga. Virgil looked at it right away and determined that it was most likely the fuel pump and ordered the part to be installed the following day. I had to rent a car to get back to NJ but at least Mavis seemed genuinely interested in helping.

It sure is nice to find an honest shop that also is fast, friendly and offers a courtesy car.... I would recommend them for sure.

Very impressed with Matthew's. Called to get our vehicle in for service and they were very accommodating to my schedule. They were very honest and the report they send via email is detailed. It is one of the above and beyond extras that they supply that I personally havent seen at other auto service shops. The vehicle was also ready for pick before the time that was given to me for completion. Someone recommended Matthew's to me so I am now recommending Matthew's to anyone who needs auto service without hesitation!
